BBC sports personality coming to Sheffield

This year (2009) sees the BBC sports personality of the year award coming to Sheffield for the first time in the events history. The event takes place at Sheffield Arena on Sunday 13th December at 7pm and follows the successful 2008 which was held infront of a record crowd of 9,000 people at the Liverpool Echo Arena – a crowd that saw Olympic sprint cyclist Sir Chris Hoy crowned as the winner. The event holds a special place in the hearts of the British public and was watched by almost 10 million TV viewers in 2008. The event was traditionally held at the BBC Television Centre but has gone out on the road for the previous 3 years. Much like England playing their home games away from Wembley (as the new stadium was built), this has proved to be a really successful concept from the BBC and has re-invigorated an event that is over 50 years old.

The BBC sports personality award was first won by Chris Chattaway in 1954 and has been won by many famous names since, including Henry Coooper, Ian Botham, Damon Hill, David Beckham and Jonny Wilkinson.

If you are planning on attending the event and visiting Sheffield then you might want to consider booking a serviced apartment in Sheffield with Serviced City Pads. An apartment would prove to be a good alternative to staying in hotel in sheffield, offering more space and comfort at a better price.

The current favourite to win this years award is Jenson Button, the new Formula 1 world Champion – and Serviced City Pads goes along with the bookmakers odds, and thinks that Button will win this year. The event has a history of picking winners from the field of motorsport, although David Haye could provide a surprise at odds of 6/1. The London boxer recently beat Russian giant, NicolayValuev to become the first British heavyweight champion of the world since Lennox Lewis.

Sheffield is a fantastic place to visit for a short stay. In terms of it’s geographical size it is the fourth biggest city in the UK and has benefitted massively from urban regeneration over the last fifteen years.
