London Apartments for the 2011 BBC Proms

The Proms, formally known as The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts present by the BBC, is a two month season of orchestral classical music concerts. These are held daily, usually in the Royal Albert Hall in central London. The Proms enter into its 116th year in 2011 having been founded in 1895. The Proms consists mainly of the Albert Hall concerts but also of various other events held in London parks and more recently other locations across the UK, especially on the last night. In 2009 the number of events and concerts that took place over the season reached 100 for the first time. In 2011 The Proms will take place 15th July – 10th September.

One of the reasons why the Proms is so popular and has been described as “the world’s largest and most democratic musical festival” is that tickets can be bought at such a cheap price (pay just £5 for a ticket.) and on a first come first serve basis. Single-concert Prom tickets can be bought, with few exceptions, only on the day of the concert, which can give rise to long queues for well-known artists or works. Proms concert-goers, can buy full- or half-season tickets instead for guaranteed entry (until 20 minutes before the concert is due to start), although not the assurance of a particular standing position. The main events take place in the Royal Albert Hall where up to 900 ‘Prommers’ can stand in the central arena and a further 500 can stand, sit or recline in the Gallery.
