Unless you’ve been living under a rock this year, you’ll know Ed Sheeran is a 20 year old singer-songwriter from Halifax, who made his breakthrough into the charts in June this year with his number 3 hit, ‘The A Team’. The song was played on repeat on radios and music channels across the UK over the summer and was credited as being the highest selling and highest charting debut of 2011.  Sheeran has been on the music scene for years, just under the surface of the radar. He released his first EP, ‘The Orange Room’, in 2005 which was quickly followed by two albums in the next two years, ‘Ed Sheeran’ and ‘Want Some?’. Ed has worked hard to showcase his talent, moving to London and playing gigs every day to as many people as possible. He later stated that he played over 300 gigs in 2009 alone. A further two EPs were released before Ed jumped on a plane to Los Angeles in a brave bid to achieve recognition. After playing at open mic nights all over the city, he was spotted by American superstar Jamie Foxx and shortly after, his fan base steadily grew with celebrity fans such as Rio Ferdinand and Elton John expressing their approval in the press. His big break came in 2011 after his final EP, ‘No.5 Collaborations Project’ reached number 2 on the ITunes chart without any kind of marketing or promotions. His debut album ‘+’ stormed the charts reaching number 1 and the two released singles so far, ‘The A Team’ and ‘You Need Me’, both reached the UK Top Five. If you’re an Ed Sheeran fan then he is playing the HMV Picturehouse, Edinburgh on the 10th and 11th January 2012. It is sure to be a great night.
