Hogmanay is the Scottish word for the end of the year and every year, Edinburgh makes sure the year ends with a bang and the New Year is brought in in style. Traditional customs include first-footing, which is the tradition of the being first person to cross the threshold of neighbours house bearing symbolic gifts such as whisky and shortbread which are supposed to bring luck to the householder. This year, Edinburgh will see thousands of party goers take to the streets to celebrate and welcome in the New Year to a backdrop of music and a fantastic firework display over Edinburgh Castle, where 4.5 tonnes of jaw-dropping pyrotechnics will light up the city. On the 30th, Edinburgh will see a torchlight procession led by Vikings dragging a historic warship through the streets culminating in a firework display on Calton Hill. The 31st brings concerts, the huge Hogmanay Street Party and the epic display of fireworks at midnight. The festivities don’t stop there as on the first day of every year, a brave few hundred reverlers wear fancy dress and jump into the freezing cold water of South Queensferry. January 2nd is a bank holiday in Scotland, giving Hogmanay’s party goers the chance to relax and recover from the festivities.
