Serviced apartments in Edinburgh are available for next year’s Dead by Dawn festival which will take place from 29th March – 1st April 2012. Dead by Dawn is a horror film festival that has taken place annually since 1993 (except for a break in 2010) at Edinburgh’s Filmhouse. The festival is an international affair with films from all around the world – this Serviced City Pads blogger was lucky enough to attend last year’s festival, and there was a great diversity of films on display. This year’s line-up is still to be confirmed, but a quick recap of last year’s line-up will illustrate the range of film on offer. In terms of the more traditional fare there was “The Last Employee”, a haunting ghost story from Germany, and “Julia’s Eyes” a Spanish psychological chiller about a woman losing her sight. There were also some films that don’t fit the traditional horror mould, but were frightening nonetheless, such as the Japanese drama “Cold Fish” by arch provocateur Sion Sono. There were also some strange offerings like the excellent Korean film “The Neighbour Zombie”, which was composed of short films made by Korean film-makers. British film was represented by the absolutely charming and funny “Harold’s Going Stiff” which saw a lonely old man suffering from the onset of zombie like symptoms making a new friend. There was space for comedy at the festival too, with “Dale & Tucker vs. Evil” and “Chop”, which was an absolutely inspired parody of “Hostel” and “Saw”. As well as showcasing new film, the festival also offered the chance to see classic horror on the big screen – last year saw screenings of “Carrie”, Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers”, and “Killer Klowns from Outer Space”. It’s not all about features though; the festival also showcased short films and animation from all over the world. For anybody who loves horror film, the Dead by Dawn festival will be a delight – you will have the opportunity to see film from all over the world. If you want a challenge, you can try to survive the Saturday night all night screening – it ran until 7.00am in the morning, and this blogger is proud to say he managed to make it through, meaning that he did not miss a single thing on the festival bill.
