Serviced apartments available near Edinburgh Castle

Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, is the second most popular tourist destination in the UK coming second only to London. It is a city rich in heritage and culture with over 4500 listed buildings and 40 conservation areas, one of these being Edinburgh Castle. Edinburgh Castle is steeped in history and is the most popular paid tourist attraction in Scotland. It lies on top of the volcanic rock, Castle Rock and dominates the skyline of the city. There has been a royal castle on the site as far back as the twelfth century although most of the present buildings date back no further than the sixteenth century.  This is a result of the Lange Siege in which the medieval defences were largely destroyed by artillery fire.

Visitors can take guided tours of the castle where knowledgeable and experienced tour guides will be able to tell you all about its history and present use. Highlights include the panoramic views across Edinburgh, the National War Museum of Scotland and the One o’clock Gun which is fired by the master gunner every day except Sunday at 1pm. It has been fired almost every day since 1861 and is a tradition still standing from when it was a signal for ships. Other must sees include the Royal Palace where the Kings and Queens of Scotland have lived and the Great Hall with its original hammerbeam roof.
