This season’s Premier League is shaping up as a battle between Manchester United and Manchester City for the title. Manchester United began the season as the favourites, as they have done for many seasons since the Premier League’s foundation. The Red Devils won a record 19th league title last season, eclipsing Liverpool’s record of 18, and with a comeback win against City in the charity shield all the signs pointed to continued United dominance in this year’s league season. The pundits were quick to point out the injection of youth into the squad with the acquisition of Phil Jones, Ashley Young, and David de Gea, as well as a coming of age for United academy products Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley, and it was argued that United would be unstoppable this season. However, as the season has progressed it has become clear that City have significantly closed the gap on their rivals, and with the signings of Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy along with the continued development of Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko (not to mention the peerless David Silva), they are now looking like serious title contenders. The first derby of the season at Old Trafford was billed as a title decider (in October…) and it was expected to be a toe to toe slugfest between two titans. What emerged instead was arguably the most embarrassingly one-sided contests of the season (yes, even more than Arsenal versus United – at least the Gunners had the excuse of fielding a massively understrength and inexperienced team due to injuries and suspensions) as Fergie’s boys were hammered 6 – 1. As the goals mounted up it became clear that we could be seeing a defining moment in the history of both clubs – could this season see City become the dominant Manchester superpower, eclipsing their rivals? Well, before we get carried away this was just one match and there is a whole lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season. The one thing that can be guaranteed is that for Manchester football fans this season will be even more exciting than usual.
