Trafalgar Square is a public space and tourist attraction in the central London. The name commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, a key British naval victory during the Napoleonic Wars. At the square’s centre is its most iconic feature, and also one of the most famous icon of London itself. Nelson’s Column stands 169 ft 3ins (51.59 metres) tall from the very bottom of the pedestal to the top of Nelson’s hat. It is guarded by four big old lion statues at the base.
Trafalgar Square is used for a wide range of activities and events throughout the year. These include demonstrations and rallies, filming and photographic shoots, as well as promotional and performance based events. The square is also a very popular location for people celebrating the start of the New Year. Many thousands gather in the square each New Year’s Eve, despite their being a lack of official organisation (partly because authorities are worried about health and safety and would have to take on liability if anything goes wrong.)
Another great attraction in Trafalgar Square is The Fourth Plinth, in the north-west of the square, which was originally intended for an equestrian statue but was empty for many years, is now the location for specially commissioned artworks. The current piece of art on display is ‘Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle’ a piece by leading Ango-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE. It is the first commission on the Fourth Plinth to reflect specifically on the historical symbolism of Trafalgar Square, which commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar.
