Stay in a serviced apartment when you visit Chester Zoo!
Chester Zoo is one of the UK’s largest zoos and is the most visited wildlife attraction in Britain with more than 1.3 million visitors a year. There are over 8000 animals to discover. In addition to this, Chester Zoo is also home to over 200 endangered plant species. Chester Zoo was opened in 1931 by George Mottershead and his family; he had a visionary view to zoos and didn’t want his to be like the traditional Victorian zoos with iron bars and cages. He took inspiration from Carl Hagenbeck, the inventor of the modern zoo concept, and used moats and ditches to secure his animals. This is still in place today.
The zoo has a large number of exhibits. ‘Elephants of the Asian Forest’ is an elephant house with a current breeding herd of 8 Asian elephants. Chester Zoo was the first zoo in the UK to breed Asian elephants in captivity successfully and they remain one of the most popular animals in the zoo. Another exciting exhibit is the ‘Fruit Bat Forest’, which is the largest bat cave in Europe. The bats are free to fly around amongst visitors and this often makes for some scary moments as they shoot past you in the dark! The big cats are also popular and the zoo welcomed its first ever cheetah cubs in 2011.
