Viva Spanish Film Festival returns to Manchester

The Serviced City Pads blog has always enjoyed cinema from around the world, and so is excited about the Viva Spanish film festival will be taking place in Manchester next March at the Cornerhouse Cinema.

The festival will run from the 5th to the 27th March 2011, and will provide a platform for Spanish language cinema from Spain and Latin America. The range of films on offer is sure to be exciting and diverse. There will be the Mexican period drama Tear this Hear Out, Spanish comedy Fat People, and Sins of My Father, a documentary made with the son of Pablo Escobar. The festival won’t just be film screenings either – there will be introductions by film makers and some debates and discussions which should be lively. Also, there will be a gallery exhibition of the work of Colombian artist Oscar Munoz.

Spanish language cinema has continued to make an impact in recent years, and many Spanish film makers and performers have gained mainstream recognition and success. The director Guillermo Del Toro garnered the plaudits for the haunting masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth, which was praised for its unique visual style. He continues to balance his own original and offbeat projects with big mainstream fare such as the Hellboy series. Actors such as Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem have made their mark on Hollywood and have drawn people’s attention to the exciting work coming out of Spain – Bardem with the recent Biutiful, and Cruz with her collaborations with Almodovar.

The Viva Spanish Film Festival in Manchester is sure to be a fantastic event for any connoisseurs of Spanish language cinema. Equally, if you’re not so familiar with the joys of world cinema, what better way to learn more than attending this event?
